Keeping families safe on social media

It's always a good idea to keep yourself safe on social media so here's some good help and advice to make sure your privacy settings are set correctly.
Perhaps a quick safety check idea for all the family, after dinner.

You can never be too careful:

Social networking sites are great for keeping in touch with family and friends, and letting the world know what you’re up to. The ‘Online engagement guidelines’ make it clear that we encourage the safe and responsible use of social networking sites.
This page contains guidance on how to stay safe and to think about what you post online. Remember, that there may be those who use such sites for unsavoury reasons.

Be extra careful if you have identified yourself as being a member of the military or an MOD civilian.

There is a short guide to appropriate social media behaviour for defence personnel.
You can also download the Personal security online (PDF, 1.55MB, 11 pages) file which contains some more detailed guidance.

Security and privacy settings

Whenever you join a social network, you should always look at the privacy and security settings. Do this frequently as settings are subject to change. For example, on Facebook, access to friends only (Friends except Acquaintances) is always a good option as means others (friends of your friends) can't browse your pages, who you potentially don't know.
Each social network deals with privacy and security in different ways, and you shouldn’t share information on their service until you know where that could end up.

Pictures and videos

Pictures are powerful and often revealing assets that can also pose a risk to personal and operational security if placed in the wrong hands.
Whether in a professional or personal capacity, you should always consider what information you are revealing through imagery you publish online.
Always consider how the images and videos you publish might be interpreted, and what level of information they are displaying. Remember, unless you have appropriate privacy settings activated, there is a strong chance your images can be viewed by the wider public. Consider whether you wish to identify yourself, your colleagues, family members or your location, and how you are representing your profession.
There are video clips and lots more information on the GOV.UK website.

Stay secure - important message about access to Service homes

There have been some recent reports of incidents where people have tried to gain unauthorised access to Service Family Accommodation.

All families are advised that it is very rare for CarillionAmey or Defence Infrastructure Organisation staff to turn up unannounced, and in particular they will not turn up to undertake unannounced work or inspections.

We ask that all Service families remain vigilant when receiving unexpected visits and ask to see identification.  If you receive an unexpected request to undertake work and wish to check credentials please call the CarillionAmey Helpdesk on 0800 707 6000.  If you have any concerns about your security please contact the Police or your local security section/guardroom immediately.  Any additional information regarding Description of Callers and Vehicle Details may assist in any subsequent investigation.

In addition, if you see any suspicious activity in your area, including people or vehicles, please take the details and pass them to the Police or security section.  Do not potentially put yourself in danger by confronting anyone.

The Victory Services Club - Launches a new Dining Experience

After an eight-month period of extensive reconstruction and refurbishment, the Victory
Services Club opened the doors of its fabulous new Club Dining Room and Grill to members
and their guests on Saturday 10th October 2015. The new space, which is fully air
conditioned, features three distinct areas, in which all meals will be taken in the ground floor
of this lovely building. The contemporary Coffee Bar area will serve fresh Lavazza coffee
and pastries all day. This is also suited to those seeking an early morning quick breakfast ‘on
the go’. The design of the dining facilities fully complements the style of the Club with a
strong artistic focus on military subjects and iconic London landmarks. The main dining
space is divided into two areas by a beautiful glass wall showing a hand-drawn impression of
the frontage of the Club. The bespoke lighting and the state of the art sound system really
adds to the overall ambience of this outstanding restaurant.

The Grill will offer a more casual atmosphere where Club classics such as the VSC Burger
can be ordered. The Grill menu includes a different Club Dish every day for the great price of
just £9.95; an example of this will be one of the traditional classics, such as Shepherd’s Pie.
Members will also be able to select platters, salads, fresh fish dishes which is available all
day and enjoy the ever-popular Steak Night, every Monday.

The Club Dining Room will offer high quality dining in a sophisticated modern setting, where
separate a la carte; lunch and pre-theatre dining menus will be available. This area also
has an impressive ‘wine wall’ which adds further to the sense of quality and service which,
together with value, are the Club’s trademarks. The restaurant will continue to offer
outstanding value for money, which was one of the project’s primary objectives. Members
can enjoy two courses for only £16.50 from the lunch and pre-theatre menus in the Club
Dining Room including, for example, Smoked Salmon Roulade & Loch Fyne Salmon Mousse
and Paupiettes of Plaice with Crab Mousse.

This dining experience really does cater for all, with its ingenious design it provides
everything under one roof for its members, serving everything from a la carte dining through
to a quick coffee and pastries on the go.

Victory Services Club was established in 1907 and is a tri-service, all ranks Members’ Club
for currently serving and retired members of the Armed Forces and their families. The Club
has two charitable objectives: to provide a place for serving and ex-serving personnel to
meet; and to support serving or ex-serving personnel who face hardship or distress,
including those wounded as a result of operational service by providing Respite & Welfare

The Club offers a truly unique Club atmosphere offering excellent service and value for
money, impressive accommodation, varied dining options and events.
